Day 12

2/17/2015

Matthew 5:16 (ESV)
16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Meditative thoughts:
God put lights in the sky for a reason, and we put lights in our homes for a reason.  In what way does God want your faith to serve as a light?
Jesus is saying our good works are truly good when what happens?

from The Sermon on The Mount, David Scaer, p. 98.

Mt 5:13-16 "Salt and Light" The concluding verse of this pericope, "Thus let your light so shine before men..." flows out of the previous section as referring to what Christians do by nature. It should not be seen as a command or threat and should not be interpreted within Paul's concept of faith vs. works. When the message of Jesus is proclaimed by the church, the works will be seen flowing from the preaching. Works here cannot be taken to refer to mere moral or ethical behavior... The good works which men see are the works of mercy which Jesus also did among the people. These works, suggested in the Beatitudes, are works of those who are merciful and serve as peacemakers among men. These works thus bring the reality of the redemption into the world. The works that serve the church's preaching of the Gospel are the church withstanding persecution and exercising love to all people. The followers of Jesus stand in His place in the world.

To quote thr Newsboys

"Shine, make 'em wonder what you got, make 'em wish that they were not, on the outside looking in."

A favorite saying of mine is:

Preach the Gospel at all times...When necessary, use words.

God has an opportunity for us every day to show His love!
