Day 35

3/13/2015

Isaiah 46:3-4  (NIV84) I have upheld you since you were conceived, and have carried you since your birth. Even to your old age and gray hairs I am He, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.

Meditative thoughts:
How do these verses express God’s commitment to me?
If God has promised to care for me my whole life, to what extent can I trust Him when I give generously to the work of the church?

From: Concordia Commentary, Isaiah 40-55, R. Reed Lessing, cph

Is 46:3-4
3 "Listen to me, O house of Jacob
and all the remnant of the house of Israel,
the ones being carried from the womb,
the ones lifted up from before birth:
4 until old age I am he,
and until gray hair I myself will bear.
I myself made, and I myself lift up,
and I myself will bear, and I will rescue."

Commentary

Yahweh Carries His People All the Days of their Life

In contrast to the idols, Yahweh points out that, although his people have been a heavy burden, he has carried them since their conception, even before their birth. Israel did not carry God; how could it? ...Yahweh carries Israel.. In Is 40:11 the Shepherd lifts up lambs into his lap and leads the nursing mothers,..

...Yahweh's ultimate act of carrying comes through the Suffering Servant: "our sufferings--he carried them" (Is 53:4),...

Carrying Israel implies suffering. The people are a heavy load to bear! ...

...In his Suffering Servant, himself guiltless, Yahweh bears not only the burden of Israel's sin, but also the sin of the whole world (1 Jn 2:2;cf. 2 Cor 5:19). Jesus was laden with sin (Is 53:4-6) when he carried it in his body (1 Pet 2:24) so that in him we are credited with God's own righteousness (2 Cor 5:21).
