Day 36

3/13/2015

Genesis 28:20-22   20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear 21 so that I return safely to my father’s household, then the Lord will be my God 22 and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.”

Meditative thoughts:
Jacob spoke these words as a single young man with no job or income.  How can I rely on God as Jacob did?
I have much to be thankful for because of Christ Jesus.  How do I show my gratitude to God through my worship and gifts to Him?

Jacob's Dream Genesis 28:10-22

From TLSB

v. 12 - And he dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it!

Luther: "This dream signified that infinite, inexpressible, and wondrous mystery of the incarnation of Christ, who was to descend from the patriarch Jacob ... This is a wonderful ascent and descent of the angels, to see the highest and the lowest completely united on one and the same Person, the highest God lying in the manger."

v. 17 And he was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place ! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven."

(gate of heaven) A place where heaven and earth meet through God's revelation. For where God's Word is, there heaven is open with all graces.

From: A Year in The Old Testament - Third Sunday in Lent

...Here is the unchangeable truth, the eternal dwelling place of the Word and its powerful work. That which connects the saints who from their labors rest to the saints militant on this earth is found in this place. The eternal life-working Word, the waters of new life in the font, the Holy Meal of Christ's body and blood: they are all in this place, all present for His people, and all working the forgiveness of sins and promising resurrection into the everlasting realms. These blessings, found in this place, connect heaven to earth until such a time as they are one on the last day.
